<p>The 3D prints in the video were created with a high-end 3D printer,but they could have been manufactured with a consumer desktop 3D printer as well,albeit with a reduced level of fidelity.</p>

<p>Aside from its accessibility,another significant advantage of 3D printing for prototyping is its enormous versatility. <p>Another advantage of 3D printing is its speed when compared to other prototyping methods. It could take tens of hours to finish a huge,sophisticated,high-resolution 3D print. This per-part time is slow in comparison to typical manufacturing techniques,such as injection molding,but it is quick for prototyping. Many other types of prototypes must be ordered from production companies,which can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks,plus shipping time.</p>

<h2>Prototyping Drawbacks of 3D Printing</h2>



<p>Despite the numerous advantages,there are three major drawbacks to using 3D printing for prototyping:</p>

<h2>3D Printed Prototypes Have Lower Performance</h2>



<p>To begin with,3D printed prototypes lack the mechanical qualities of manufactured parts. The first of multiple reasons is because 3D printed parts are not constructed of solid materials; instead,infill patterns,which are lattices of printed plastic that fill the internal volume of a part,are used. While this can result in pieces that are surprisingly sturdy,they do not function as well as parts manufactured from solid material via injection molding or CNC machining.</p>

<p>Another source of worry is the manufacturing process for 3D printed products. 3D printed objects are prone to splitting between levels since they are built up in layers. This,once again,distinguishes the performance of 3D parts from that of other approaches.</p>

<h2>A very expensive final product can result from 3D printing a prototype</h2>



<p>The second disadvantage of 3D printing prototyping is really one of the technology's advantages. While 3D printing allows for amazing design flexibility,it does so at a cost that other manufacturing processes cannot match. This means that a 3D printed prototype can be made that would be prohibitively expensive or impossible to construct otherwise.</p>



<p>3DBenchy,for example,is a common 3D printer assessment object. This little boat puts several 3D printer skills to the test. Any mid- to high-end 3D printer can readily print this part with excellent results. However,tooling expenses alone for the identical design in injection molding might cost up to a quarter of a million dollars.</p>

<p>So,in order to get the greatest results from 3D printed prototypes,designers must consider the design criteria for the manufacturing method that will be used to build the item in the end.</p>



<h2>Aesthetic's Limit in 3D Printing</h2>



<p>The aesthetics of employing 3D printing to create product prototypes are the final consideration. Layer lines are apparent in finished items because 3D prints are produced in layers.</p>



<p>This may or may not be a worry,depending on the purpose of your prototype part. Layer lines in the prototype are probably unimportant if you're only testing the fit,overall design,or function of a part. However,visible layer lines that detract from the aesthetics of the object and make it immediately identified as a 3D print can be a concern for final prototypes.</p>

<h2>Final Thoughts on Prototypes Made with 3D Printing</h2>



<p>One of the most widely used technologies for manufacturing dimensionally correct and functioning prototype pieces is 3D printing. When compared to other computer-driven prototyping technologies like CNC machining or laser cutting,desktop 3D printers are less expensive. There are also a variety of 3D printing firms that will manufacture prototypes utilizing industrial 3D printing equipment if your product requires a high-end 3D printer to prototype.</p>

<p>Prototypes made with 3D printing are useful for gaining a better understanding of a product's form and function. 3D printouts can also be used as working prototypes in specific circumstances.</p>



<p>3D printed prototypes,on the other hand,are not as sturdy as parts made with other technologies. Furthermore,3D printers can only create plastic parts. Industrial 3D printers can make prototypes out of numerous metals,but they are thousands of dollars more expensive than desktop 3D printers.</p>



<p>CNC machining is another computer-driven prototyping method that can be used to make prototypes from metal,wood,ceramics or other materials that are either too expensive or impossible to use with 3D printers.</p>
