In the reverse bias region,it can be seen that a Schottky diode conducts a much higher reverse saturation current. The reverse current in a Schottky diode is not due to minority charge carriers; instead,it only contributes to electron current. Again,it can be noticed that the reverse breakdown voltage of the Schottky diode is smaller than the PN junction diode.

The energy needed to separate an electron from an ion varies depending on whether the material is an n-type semiconductor or a metal. Compared to free electrons in a metal,electrons in n-type semiconductors have higher potential energy. The Schottky barrier height,which prevents any transfer of electrons from the semiconductor to the metal,is equal to the difference between the work functions of metal and semiconductor. The Schottky diode does not have a P-type semiconductor,hence holes are not the dominant charge carriers.
