Low Side Sense is a component of listening over the current lock. An over current latch with low side sense is a protection circuit that is used to protect a load from being damaged due to an over current condition. The protection circuit monitors the current through the load and if it exceeds a certain threshold,the protection circuit will activate and disable the load. The protection circuit typically uses a transistor to switch the load off.



<h2>Outline how to hook up low side sense to an output circuit with a latching function.</h2>



This circuit incorporates a low side sensingovercurrent detection<a href="https://eduengteam.com/2022/03/electronic-circuits-active-vs-passive.html" data-type="post" data-id="4402"> circuit</a> with a latching output to allow disabling an external high-side PMOS load switch with a simple  <a href="https://www.dialog-semiconductor.com/products/greenpak/slg46110" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GreenPAK™ SLG46110V</a>. As you're using a very small 0.010 low side capacitance sense resistor,you may connect one of the onboard comparators (ACMP1) to detect a current of 4 A. The complete schematic is shown in Figure 1,and the internal architecture of the VAcSP (SLG46110V GreenPAK) circuit is shown in Figure 2.

The circuit capabilities,as well as the simulation waveforms,are shown in Figure 3. Once the 4 A limit is exceeded (as seen by the yellow trace),the output of ACMP0 will trip HIGH,setting both the Latch 2 and the OC FAULT outputs HIGH (shown by the green trace). The /OC LATCH OUT and OC LATCH OUT outputs move LOW when the Latch 2 output is HIGH,turning off the load switch. The /OC LATCH OUT output on Pin 9 will remain LOW even after the overcurrent event has passed,keeping the external load switch set OFF.



The location input,LATCH OUT,will not rise until the water saw a failure event or a cleared overcurrent The LATCH OUT location input will not rise until the water has seen a failure event or an overcurrent alarm situation has been cleared. Even if the trace is still on,the OC LATCH OUT output on Pin 9 will remain LOW once the overcurrent alarm has been deactivated. The FAULT (ACMP0) output will drop to LOW once the fault pins are separated,and the OC FAULT output will drop to LOW as well because it follows the ACMP0 state. On the other hand,the /OC LATCH OUT output will stay latched LOW. In this situation,the micro can look at the OC FAULT signal,determine that the overcurrent condition has been rectified,and send a LOW going pulse to the /RESET input on Pin 2. (shown by the orange trace). The low-going pulse on the /RESET input will reset Latch 2's output to LOW,turning on the external switch and setting the /OC LATCH _OUT output HIGH.

To fulfill the needs,the voltage trip level,signal polarities,load switch,and sense resistor may all be modified. To increase the circuit's functioning,additional features can be added to the SLG46110V's unused resources. For example,a "automatic retry" circuit could be implemented to clear the /OC LATCH OUT signal after a set amount of time. If the overcurrent scenario proceeded to cause another immediate trip,the circuit would retry. If it was unsuccessful,it would try to clear the /OC LATCH OUT signal a predetermined number of times before latching the /OC LATCH OUT signal LOW. The external switch would be shut off until the fault was cleared and a low-going pulse was an input on Pin 2,/RESET.

It was created in the GreenPAK Designer software (a part of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.dialog-semiconductor.com/go-configure-software-hub" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Go Configure™ Software Hub</a>).



<h2>Configuring GreenPAK Comparators as OpAmps</h2>



Using a particular GreenPAK function,it's typical to require a boost signal to bring the output signal into a small range for use by the ADC or comparator. A PGA is available in certain GreenPAK devices to fulfill this goal.



The PGA's flexibility is fairly versatile,but the input voltage range is limited,and you can amplify only a certain amount. There are no extrnal operational amplifiers in the SLG46110V. (OpAmps). As a result,it would be optimal to integrate some gain into your GreenPAK design without requiring more OpAmps.



One way to accomplish this is to try to convert one of the onboard comparators to an OpAmp. This has been done for years in highly integrated solutions when cost and size were important considerations. You can successfully construct a low-power OpAmp from a spare comparator in your GreenPAK design with a little work and a few external Rs and C's. This is not a high-speed,high-performance OpAmp,but for many situations where the gain on a sensor's input signal is required,we just need to amplify a slow-moving DC signal.



To set up one of the comparators as an OpAmp,we first have to examine the entire circuit,as illustrated in Figure 4. The comparator is set up as a non-inverting OpAmp,with VIN connected to the comparator's non-inverting input.



The inverting input of the comparator is connected to the resistive divider's center point (R1 and R2),with C1 adding a bit of feedback time constant to the inverting signal. R3 functions as a low pass filter when combined with C2,providing a cutoff frequency of 24 Hz in this scenario. The voltage across C2 is then VOUT.

This is how the circuit functions. When the input voltage at VIN is lower than the voltage across C1 and C1,the comparator output signal is HIGH. The voltage across C1 rises as a result. When the input voltage at VIN exceeds the voltage across C1 and C1,the comparator output signal flips to LOW. The voltage across C1 currently continues to decrease until it becomes below the threshold value of VIN,at which point the comparator's output signal reiterates itself HIGH,and the sequence repeats. Its transfer function dictates the filtered-averaged voltage present on the capacitor,C2,after many cycles of operation.



VOUT = VIN (R1 + R2) / R2



The value of the circuit in the preceding graph (Figures 1 and 4) was measured and proven to produce numbers very close to the calculated x3.2 gain. Figure 2 offers a table containing measurement results alongside a data plot for VOUT versus VIN at VDD 3.3 V in each case.

When the input is approximately .3 V and the output is around the 0.5 V rail,as illustrated in Figure 5,there is a little bit of inaccuracy at both ends of this plot. At the low end of the VOUT vs. VIN plot there is an offset. If necessary,this offset can be calibrated out of the system,but that was not the goal of this research. On the Internet there are numerous techniques for correcting OpAmp offsets.As we get close to the VDD rail at the the top of the graph,the gain becomes increasingly nonlinear.



The value of the circuit in the graph in Figure 4 was measured and found to be very close to the calculated x3.2 gain. A spreadsheet containing actual values is given in Table 1 along with an associated graph for VOUT versus VIN at VDD of 3.3 V.



The current output range is a further restriction of this circuit. The IN attach at VIN can accept voltages up to VDD,but the IN- attach is limited to about 1.2 V. For example,a 1.5 V VIN signal with a gain of 2 and VDD 3.3 V will result in the circuit exceeding the internal node's input voltage range. When IN- exceeds 1.3 V,the output will go to the rail until VIN drops below 1.2 V,so the VIN range should be limited at 0 VIN 1.2 V,maximum.



Additional VIN versus VOUT data is provided at multiple gains for both VDD 3.3 V and VDD five V. The settings are described in the caption of Table 2 and pictured in Figures 6 and 7. In all cases,the gain is linear in the VIN 1.1 V and VOUT VDD 300 mV values.

A screenshot of the circuit constructed into an SLG46110V is shown in Figure 8. The diagram depicts not just the circuit,but also the remaining resources and pins that can be used to create other features and functionalities. The actual GreenPAK design program is also included.

According to the analysis,the circuit performs admirably and as planned. For VOUT VDD - 300 mV and VIN 1.1 V,the gain is very linear and accurate. This performance is more than adequate for adding some needed gain to many slow varying DC signals,allowing the designer to now measure and compare these signal values more accurately and easily without adding additional external OpAmps.
