The I2C communication protocol method requires one device to act as the system's peripherals manager. The host computer's remaining peripherals (including microcontrollers) are set as slave devices. The slave devices address the system and send information to the host system in response to the commands of the peripherals manager.



Each slave device in the I2C bus has its own eight-bit address which is reserved for write access. The first 7 parts of that address are the device's owner,and the last is 1 for write access and 0 for reading access.



Data in I2C is sent in 8-byte units (one byte). I2C communication protocol controls data transfer by piggybacking on a kind of handshake. If the master transmits one byte,it waits for the slave device to respond with one byte of an acknowledge bit whereas the master sends the next byte of data and repeats the process for the other byte. The master sends an acknowledgment bit to the slave before processing the next byte of data.
